2019-2020 Tryout Registration is Now Open

Dear WYHA Families,

Thank you to everyone in the program for your contribution to making Wellesley Youth Hockey among the best hockey programs in the country.  Players, parents and coaches have all made extraordinary contributions during a year when we had to make sacrifices.  As the Wellesley Sports Center becomes a reality for the 2019-2020 hockey season, we wanted to share with you our vision for Wellesley Youth Hockey for 2018/2019 and beyond.

We are in the midst of another great hockey season with over 500 boys and girls participating in Wellesley Youth Hockey for 2018/2019.   WYHA is already one of the largest and most successful youth hockey programs in the state as measured by number of players and success in league play.  Additionally four teams have earned their way to compete in the State Tournament including our U-14A, Bantam C, Peewee A and Peewee B teams.  Congrats and best of luck!

Wellesley Sports Center

Wellesley Youth Hockey will be the anchor tenant at the Wellesley Sports Center and will have 60+ hours of ice per week to be used for team practices, Skill sessions and games.  This world class complex features an incredible ecosystem anchored by two rinks; a jogging track; a turf field; competition pool and diving pool.  Additionally, several retail amenities have signed on including a Strength & Conditioning Center, Inspirica Tutoring and Profilers Edge Skate Shop.

Most importantly, the Wellesley Sports Center provides an incredible opportunity for WYHA as we will be able to offer our players an opportunity to have the right amount of ice time on a regularly scheduled basis.  We will design our program around the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) in an effort to offer our players the best hockey program.

Skill Development for all WYHA Players:  We are happy to announce a partnership with Tim Driscoll and Driscoll Skating & Skills.  Tim and his team will provide high-level on-ice skill-training once a week to every player within WYHA.  For the past few seasons, Tim has run Power Skating and Skills for WYHA players at Roxbury Latin and we are partnering with him as part of our core offering.   Each Skills session will have no more than three teams on the ice per session allowing Tim and his staff to work individually with all of our players.  Tim and his team are well known for teaching Power Skating to hockey players and we share Tim’s belief in a Long-Term Development Model that focuses on Skating as the core of a Skills program. Further, Tim is gifted at working with players of all ages and abilities and is pro-Town Hockey. Each team will be designated a regularly scheduled timeslot on either Monday or Wednesday night.  In addition to Skills, each team will have at least one team practice and a game per week.

Enhanced Goalie Program:  Under the guidance of Goalie Director Terry Baillie, we will once again offer full-season goalie training with Mike Geragosian and his team of instructors.   Goalie clinics will be open to all goalies.  The clinics are great for every level but particularly for younger goalies who are considering goaltending as a permanent position.  As always, WYHA will continue the tradition of providing goaltending equipment for those that want to try their hand at goaltending.

Evolution of Mite Program:  Two years ago, USA Hockey mandated that all mite teams play full season 4-on-4 half- ice hockey.  Since that time, WYHA has entered three stratified teams (13 players per team) into the Valley Hockey League.  We have also entered two teams into the Town Line League, a league that is run out of Bajko Rink in Hyde Park.  Based on the positive feedback we have received we will continue with both programs.  The Mite offering of one Skills session, one practice and one game per week will be squarely in line with the USA Hockey’s ADM Model.

Enhanced Learn to Play & Mosquito Program:   The program will continue to be parent-led but guidance and lesson plans will be provided by Driscoll Skating & Skills and USA Hockey.  The program will start earlier than in past seasons and its primary focus will be to grow the player’s love for the game at an early age.

National Bound Program:  WYHA will continue to support a U-16 and U-18 National Bound team.  A majority of the team is comprised of players from Wellesley with a few select players from neighboring towns.  The NB teams play in the PHL of New England with the goal of providing our elite players an opportunity to play locally as they prepare for the up-coming high-school season.

In conclusion, we are thrilled with the partnerships that we have created to offer your children the optimal hockey experience. We thank you for your patience and look forward to taking a long-term development approach to grow your child’s passion for the game of hockey!!

Tryouts for next season will begin on 3/25 at Babson.  Registration will be open soon on our website..  Good luck to all our teams at states and in playoffs.

As always please reach out with any comments or questions.
